Currently there are seven wind farms in the Dutch North Sea that jointly generate 2.5 GW of renewable electricity. Offshore wind energy already supplies the Netherlands with a significant proportion of its electricity, and this will grow considerably in the years ahead.
Floating offshore islands can be utilised for storage, energy processing and the maintenance of wind farms situated far off the coast. But this is difficult in the North Sea where the sea is rough with a lot of swell. Currently there are seven wind farms in the Dutch North Sea that jointly generate 2.5 GW of renewable electricity.
Germany alone has connected offshore wind farms to their electricity grid using HVDC technology , with distances to shore over 30 km . TenneT, the transmission system operator (TSO) of the Netherlands and part of Germany, has achieved this by installing vast offshore platforms at sea to house large converter substations.
Significant social benefits can be achieved as a result, including potential cost savings of up to 10 percent in the energy network alone. With offshore wind farms being developed, constructed, and operated without subsidies, the transport grid is becoming a major cost factor.
Ocean Grazer will start making the Ocean Battery market-ready for large-scale energy storage in the North Sea. RWE has selected the Groningen-based startup to join the development of the Hollandse Kust West VII offshore wind farm, which has been designated to demonstrate system integration.
The wind farm will be located 18.5 kilometres off the Dutch coast near the town of Egmond aan Zee. Offshore wind projects produce intermittent electricity. Balancing these dips and peaks and integrating this electricity into the national energy system, requires new technologies.
